Protect Your Pets from These Summer Hazards

Summer means plenty of fun in the sun, which creates its own set of safety concerns for our four-legged companions. Beat the heat and keep your pets happy, healthy, and cool all summer long with these tips for protecting them from common summer pet hazards.

Hazard #1: Heat & Humidity

We know that heat can take a toll on anybody—human or furry—but it can be harder to notice the signs of dehydration, heatstroke, or sunburn from our fur babies when they just want to keep playing…all day long.

Always provide your pets with plenty of clean, cool water to drink, and shady places to rest. You may even want to invest in a small kiddie pool or cooling mat for your fur baby to enjoy if you’re lacking trees or shrubs for shade.

Because dogs and cats don’t regulate their body temperate as well as we can, keep an eye out for excessive panting, fatigue, loss of appetite, and rapid heart rate during your summer celebrations.

Hazard #2: Water Activities

If you’re anything like us, your pets are part of the family: That means they come on vacation, trips to the beach, or out for a boat ride. While we can’t blame you for letting man’s best friend enjoy refreshing water activities, it’s always best to pay close attention to your pet during water activities and supervise them at all times.

Not all dogs are natural swimmers, so be sure your boat is stocked with life jackets for any four-legged sailors that may be aboard. Even when camping or hiking, you can prevent potentially fatal algae poisoning by bringing clean water for your dog to drink, and keeping them out of water that is discolored and/or has scum on the surface.

Hazard #3: Lawn & Garden

For many homeowners, summertime means more time tending to the yard or cultivating a lush garden. We know that wherever you go, your fur baby isn’t far behind.

When planting a garden or flower beds, avoid plants that are toxic to pets and wildlife. If you’re unsure if a plant is safe, you can always provide a barrier to keep curious canines and kitties from exploring too much. Even when choosing professional lawn care services, fertilizers, or pesticides, keep your pets in mind and opt for pet-safe options whenever they’re available.

If you have specific concerns or believe your pet has gotten into something they shouldn’t, we’re only a call away! Our expert staff can advise you on how to proceed—whether it’s using our walk-in emergency services, scheduling an appointment, or visiting our Emergency Services Partner, we’re always happy to help a paw in need!
