Safe Spaces for Rescue Dogs
It’s common for rescue pups to be cautious, leery, and scared at first. This can include people, situations, and items they’re unfamiliar with. Much like people, rescue dogs can have “triggers” that cause them to become afraid quickly–that stem from the trauma of the past. We recommend creating a safe space for your new pet–a place that’s all their own.
This should include a cozy pet bed, placed in a quiet part of the house such as a corner of the bedroom. Just like you and me, pets want to feel safe and comfortable, especially when they’re scared.
Safe spaces will also help your new dog to feel comfortable in your home and help reduce separation anxiety. Newly adopted rescue dogs often get anxious when you leave, but creating a safe space for them will help reduce this substantially. Be sure to use their safe space only for cozy, warm, safe times–not as a “time out” space for punishment when trying to correct their behavior.
